For many people, September 11
brings to mind melancholy and silent pain from that horrific Tuesday of 2001. Call it coincidence or fate, but it was on
Tuesday, September 11, 1973, when Democracy died in Chile, our homeland. The
Military Coup led by Augusto Pinochet changed the lives of millions --
including ours. My wife and I left Chile separately and came to the United
States. With our daughters Pilar and
Loraine, we began our new life in New Jersey.
In New Jersey, our daughter Sara
arrived into our lives, later we moved to Florida and finally to Lynchburg. In
Lynchburg we were blessed with the arrival of our son Vicente.
Struggling to find suitable employment in a challenging economy, we started of selling handcrafted items from Chile at the local farmer’s market to provide Lynchburg with a taste of South America. Business grew steadily and our new store, EASTER ISLAND, opened in Southport Mall on Wards Road in October 1987.
Twenty-five years later, EASTER ISLAND continues to grow and change to supply our customers with jewelry, décor, gifts, stones, clothing, jewelry/eyeglass repairs, and more! We still stay true to our South American heritage while offering a taste of the world. We are open seven days a week for your convenience.
